A fantasy, a horror és a sci-fi műfajában alkotó amerikai írót a legnagyobb fantasyszerzőnek tartják J. R. R. Tolkien óta. Bár nagyon fiatalon kezdett el írni, első története középiskolás korában jelent meg nyomtatásban, az írással sokáig csak részmunkaidőben foglalkozott, és csak 1979-ben lett főállású író. A hetvenes években irodalomi munkásságával több Hugo- és Nebula-díjat is nyert.
Ennek ellenére a novella- és regényírást egy átmeneti időre lecserélte a filmek világára: sorozatszerkesztő, producer, co-executive producer lett Hollywoodban, majd még később sorozatötleteket szállított különböző stúdióknak.
Időközben azonban rájött, hogy az ő igazi világa mégiscsak az írás. 1996-ban jelent meg A tűz és jég dala című sorozatának első kötete, a Trónok harca, amely hatalmas siker lett az egész világon, részben a belőle készült filmsorozatnak köszönhetően.
