Ernest Cline dolgozott már többek között felszolgálóként, videotékásként és technikai ügyfélszolgálaton is, de személyiségét elsősorban az határozza meg, hogy az évek során lehengerlően sok energiát fektetett a kockulásba. Az 1972-es születésű amerikai író már azon generáció tagja, amelynek gyermekei kényükre-kedvükre csemegézhettek a szórakoztatóipar számos területéről, így elég szabadidő birtokában alaposan megismerhették a mozi, a televízió, a képregények és a számítógépes játékok világát. A megszállottság a többszörös slam poetry- nyertes Cline esetében odáig fajult, hogy forgatókönyvet írt saját szórakoztatására az egyik kedvenc mozijához (Nyomul a nyolcadik dimenzió), egy későbbi szkriptjéből pedig film is született (Rajongók háborúja).
Ez a lelkesedés vezetett első regényének megírásához: a Ready Player One minden lapjáról süt, hogy a szerzője alapos ismerője a nyolcvanas évek popkultúrájának, hiszen csak úgy bombázza az olvasót a gyakran nyílt, néhol burkolt utalásokkal legkedvesebb alkotásaira.
A kötet óriási sikert aratott világszerte, már dolgoznak a megfilmesítésén is. Cline azóta írt még egy regényt (Armada), és már dolgozik a harmadikon.
